06 · Reindeer, Reddit, a gold mine
Days 19–21 — Oct 24–26
Work travel. Vault synced from the hotel once, nothing else.
Day 22 — Oct 27
Random Reddit evening. A thread about the reindeer-plundering bots — same complaint our server has. Buried in the comments, a reply from an obviously technical account: “the network layer’s already decompiled and published, look around.” I almost scrolled past it. Almost.
Day 23 — Oct 28
One GitHub search. Ten minutes. And there it is: lastwar.tech — a full technical dossier on the reversed client, with a companion repo holding a working reimplementation of the client’s network layer in Go. Crypto, wire protocol, command catalog, data tables, methodology — everything documented, publicly, by one person.
The numbers from the dossier, for the record: the client’s scripting bundle runs to ~18,700+ modules, the command catalog to ~3,100 network commands. The author didn’t theorize about the architecture — they rebuilt it, logged into production with it, and ran it for days. Everything I’d spent three weeks clawing toward, finished, documented, and hosted on a quiet domain.
Deflation for about an hour, then relief. My competitive ego took the hit; the project got a gift. I stopped needing to reverse the game — I needed to use the map. The job changes from RE to translation: capability → rules → detection. That’s the job management actually asked for.
Day 24 — Oct 29
There are levels to this, and that’s fine. Wrote up the capability gap list against the dossier’s command catalog — the tool surface I mapped in week 2 matches the documented commands cleanly, which is its own validation. Closed the framing question from entry 05: the dossier’s protocol pages answer variant-B in a footnote. A footnote. Three evenings of my life, footnote.
